In 1990, Razor and Tie put out their first CD - a 1970s pop compilation called Those Fabulous '70s. It was the first-ever compilation of AM-radio-friendly up-the-middle pop, and it did well enough to make Razor and Tie a viable corporate entity. In 1990-1991, they put out five more compilations, all cut from a similar cloth as Those Fabulous '70s.

All six of their 1990-1991 compilations have fun track listings, but none have particularly good sound quality. Most of these tracks sound better elsewhere.

Those Fabulous '70s (1990)

Those Funky '70s (1990)

Those Rocking '70s (1991)

Disco Fever (1991)

Sweet '70s Soul (1991)

An actual Razor And Tie catalog, circa 1993

Beginning in 1993, Razor And Tie teamed up with Warner Special Products to produce their compilations. As a result, the sound quality improved dramatically over their 1990-1991 compilations.

I dissected many of the following Razor And Tie collections in gory detail, and I can conculde the following:

  • Most of the tracks sound good, with relatively few instances of excessive compression/limiting, weird EQ, or truncation of an opening note or a fade. They're not flawless, but they're very good.
  • The same can be said of a whole lot of Warner Special Products compilations and Time-Life compilations.
  • In general, if you like the sound of these Razor And Tie collections, you'll find comparable collections released between 1992 and about 1996 on Warner Special Products and their imprints (a whole lot of single-disc and 2-CD sets released on Heartland, Sessions, Silver Eagle, Razor And Tie, etc.) and on Time-Life between about 1994 and about 2000. I think Dennis Drake's mastering work at Time-Life extended from 1995 to 2002; his discs are extra-awesome because of his superb choice of EQ.
  • In general, these collections tend not to use the lowest-generation tape sources. Steve Hoffman has said that he worked with source tapes supplied by Razor And Tie, so there was no vault-digging for these discs. If you want lower-generation tape sources, but a slightly boosted high-end EQ, look for Bill Inglot's Rhino collections released until about 1996, after which they got excessively loud. My personal preference is for the Rhino discs, because the high-end boost doesn't bother me. Dennis Drake's Time-Life discs have a lot of differently EQ'd digital clones of Rhino tracks - those probably sound the best of anything that's ever been released.

Easy '70s (1993)

I have track-by-track mastering notes for a few of the Razor And Tie collections that were mastered by Steve Hoffman. My notes show what earlier and later CDs use the same analog transfer as what's on the Razor And Tie discs.

2. Hot Hot Hot - Buster Poindexter and His Banshees of Blue 3:50 [LP mix faded early to the length of the 45]

Not sure where this came from

3. Caribbean Queen (No More Love On The Run) - Billy Ocean 3:44 [US 45 version]

Based on Warner Special Products' 3-CD After Hours (1990)

So is JCI's Only Dance 1985-1989 (1995).

4. Walk Like An Egyptian - Bangles 3:25

5. Who Can It Be Now? - Men At Work 3:23

Not sure where this came from

Warner Special Product's 2-CD Punk (1996) uses the same analog transfer as Totally '80s.

6. Addicted To Love - Robert Palmer 3:57 [video version that's possibly used on the UK 45; it's missing a beat on the intro]

Based on Island's 2-CD The Island Story (1987; this disc marks the first appearance of this version in the US, and possibly worldwide)

So is Time-Life's 2-CD Rock Dreams (1993).

7. Karma Chameleon - Culture Club 4:14 [proper length; there are also versions on CD running too short at about 3:59 and about 4:06; has tiny noise at very tail of fade]

Based on Rhino's Billboard Top Hits 1984 (1992, no noise at tail of fade)

So is Warner Special Products' 2-CD Good Times (1991; RE-1 reissue; has a tiny noise at very tail of fade), and Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 6 1984 (1995; differently-EQ'd digital clone of Billboard with lots of added compression).

10. Everybody Have Fun Tonight - Wang Chung 4:17 [true 45 edit, but suffers from tape drag; starts at 129.3 BPM and slows to 128.5 BPM by end of song]

Based on Warner Special Products' 3-CD After Hours (1990)

So is Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 4 1986 (1994; digitally identical to Totally '80s after 0:38) and JCI's Only Dance 1985-1989 (1995). All of the above suffer from tape drag. The version on Rhino's Like Omigod is a homemade attempt to recreate the 45 edit from better tape sources, but is incorrect because it misses the second edit and instead fades early. The 45 edit doesn't exist on CD in a good-sounding version; best to do your own edit from the LP version on the 1997 Greatest Hits, which sounds great.

11. Walking On Sunshine - Katrina And The Waves 4:00

Not sure where this came from, but it's kinda compressed here

The same analog transfer is used for Time Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 2 1985 (1994), JCI's Only Dance 1985-1989 (1995), Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Essential '80s (1998; differently-EQ'd digital clone of earlier Sounds Of The Eighties), and Time-Life's 2-CD Modern Rock Vol. 3 1984-1985 (digitally exactly 0.4 dB louder than earlier Sounds Of The Eighties).

So is Time-Life's Guitar Rock Vol. 13 The Early '80s (1994; digitally exactly 0.9 dB louder than Totally '80s), Warner Special Products' 2-CD Rock Box (1994; L/R channels shifted by a sample; screws up soundstage, even for this mono song), JCI's Only Dance 1980-1984 (1995), Madacy's Rock On 1982 (1996), Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Essential '80s (1998; digitally exactly 0.9 dB louder than Totally '80s), and Universal's Pure '80s (1999; differently EQ'd digital clone of Only Dance 1980-1984 but with added compression)

7. Angel Of The Morning - Juice Newton 4:09 [LP length]

Is taken from vinyl and has noise reduction!

The Capitol Juice Newton disc Greatest Hits And More (1987) inexplicably used a needledrop of 'Angel Of The Morning'. It was a very good needledrop, and didn't use any noise reduction, but was still a needledrop nonetheless. Odd for a song on the same label that was only six years old at the time...

The Cema Special Markets' cheapie 10 Best Series Greatest Hits (1992) is based on Greatest Hits And More, but with the addition of noise reduction. It's not unbearable, but it's noticeable on the fade. Compare the fade of Greatest Hits And More to the fade of 10 Best Series Greatest Hits for a rare, crystal-clear example of before/after noise reduction.

Forever '80s is based on 10 Best Series Greatest Hits (1992).

So is Time-Life's 2-CD Singers And Songwriters Vol. 13 1979-1989 (2001; digitally identical to 10 Best Series Greatest Hits).

Laura Branigan Greatest Hits Rarest

This is the only disc I have with the 'American Edit' that's taken from a tape source and plays at the proper speed. The Falco 45 tracks are surprisingly hard to find on CD with decent sound - the 'Canadian Edit' from the other side of the 45 is on Universal's More Pure '80s (2000). All the other compilations with 'Rock Me Amadeus' either play at the wrong speed or use a different edit than what's on the 45.
