Merge Two Quicken Accounts

  1. My wife and I run Quicken 2008 from two different user accounts on Windows 7 on the same computer. I don't remember having to do anything special with the program itself (other than setting up a desktop shortcut or adding it to the Start Menu for the second user to make it easier to find and start). I did however have to share the data file.
  2. Combine accounts? June 5 in Download, Add/Update Accounts (Windows) My credit card company changed my credit card number. I screwed up in editing the account in Quicken, and chose 'add' instead of 'link.' I now have two accounts with duplicate information for the past month, and the new account does not have the old transactions.

It is up to the user to determine what needs to be moved from one account to the other to 'merge' them. Quicken would have no way to know what transactions are the duplicate. Just because you have two transactions in the two registers on the same day for the same amount doesn't mean that they are in fact duplicates. How do I merge 2 chequing accounts on Quicken 2010? Account #1 has data from to 8/1/2010. Account #2 has data from 6/1/2010 to 9/1 2010. The data from 6/1/2010 to 8/1/2010 is identical in the 2 accounts. Quicken Users group, there are various discussions of how to transfer
Quickeninformation, accounts, or entire data files from one Quicken file to
another. So far as I can tell, these are all elaborations of the
basic QIF export / import procedure.

When I try this procedure, the data and transactions in certain
accounts transfer just fine. However, try what I might, the
transactions (checks written) in one of the checking accounts and the
transactions in a money market fund (checks drawn on the fund) will
not transfer. (Interestingly, the deposits in the checking account do
transfer. Also interestingly, another checking account transfers
completely without a hitch.)

In all the poking around I have done, two notable things have struck
me.

Second, Intuit customer support bulletin KB ID#: 1174b entitled
'Moving information between Quicken data files' (available on their
website) addresses the question 'How do I transfer information,
accounts, or entire data files from one Quicken file to another?' and
gives extensive detailed instructions.

Midway, it says: 'Important: QIF import is available only for asset
and liability accounts (including house and vehicle), credit card
accounts, and cash accounts. . . . QIF import is not available for
checking, savings, 401(k), or any other brokerage accounts.'

That seems to be saying pretty clearly that QIF will not import
checking account transactions (nor money market account transactions,
if such an account is a 'brokerage' account). Several Intuit customer
support bulletins lay out the same procedure, but only that one
contains the caveat.

If it is true that you can't transfer checking or 'brokerage'
accounts, it is puzzling to me that one of my checking accounts
transferred successfully. Further, it is remarkable that none of the
extensive posts here on this NG or in the msn group on the subject of
merging files / exporting-importing data / marrying, etc. even mention
such an enormous catgegory of data that can't be moved via QIF.

Does anyone here have any suggestions, enlightenment, explanations,
education, or thoughts that might help. I just need to get the data
and transactions in two separate Quicken files (both v. 2004)
transferred into one file.

(I don't see why there would be though), but why can't you just enter
historical info into your file and simply enter an adjust to zero etc. item
for some total along the way.
That way you can put in batches of history as you're so moved.
That way you wouldn't have to worry about combining some time down the road.
That way as you put it in it's always there.

FWIW, that's what I did way back when when I first began using Qkn.
It never occurred to me to make a new file.
I started using Q 'for real' and then gradually entered and reconciled prior
statements.
Depending upon the account, sometimes I just entered a statement balance
line (and offset), other times I entered the entire statement (and an offset
line) and sometimes just selected lines (and an offset line). War leaders clash of nations download.

I guess you could also put it into a parallel 'closed' account that was kept
at zero.
